Quick verdict: The ViparSpectra XS1500 Pro is one of the best compact 150W grow lights I’ve used. In my setup, it has comfortably covered around three normally sized plants while remaining easy to hang, dim and control in a simple open indoor setup.
I’ve used it with tomatoes, chillies and peppers, and the extra power over smaller 100W lights has given me more flexibility with plant spacing and hanging height without making the setup much more complicated.

These are ViparSpectra’s published coverage figures for the current XS1500 Pro. In my own setup, I found the 150W output gave me enough usable light to cover around three normally sized plants comfortably, which felt more flexible in practice than the 100W lights I’ve used.

My XS1500 Pro Setup and Results
I’ve been using the XS1500 Pro in a simple open setup, with the light suspended from a freestanding clothes rail above tomatoes, chillies and peppers.
The arrangement has worked well because the light is easy to raise as the plants grow, while the dimmer lets me adjust intensity without constantly changing the hanging height.
During earlier growth I usually ran it at around 60%, keeping the light roughly 25–35cm above the canopy. As the plants became larger, I gradually increased the output rather than running it at full power from the start.
With three plants sharing the illuminated area, growth has been compact and even, without the obvious stretching you often see when indoor plants are relying on weak natural light.
That combination of adjustable output and enough usable light for several reasonably sized plants is what has made the XS1500 Pro feel like a genuine step up from the smaller 100W lights I’ve used.
How Much Electricity Does the XS1500 Pro Use?
At full power, the ViparSpectra XS1500 Pro is rated at approximately 150W.
With this light, I’ve generally used a 16-hour daily lighting cycle. I control the schedule automatically using a TP-Link Tapo P110 smart plug, so the light switches on and off at the same time each day without me having to manage it manually.
Running the XS1500 Pro at its full 150W output for 16 hours would use around 2.4kWh of electricity per day.
Using an electricity price of 26.11p per kWh, that works out at approximately:
- 63p per day
- £4.39 per week
- £18.80 per 30-day month
In practice, the cost can be lower because the XS1500 Pro is dimmable. I’ve often run mine below full power while the plants were smaller, then increased the output as they developed and could make better use of the extra light.

How Many Plants Can the ViparSpectra XS1500 Pro Grow?
In my own setup, the XS1500 Pro has been a good fit for around three normally sized plants.
I’ve used it over a mix of tomatoes, chillies and peppers, and that feels like a sensible working capacity for this light without trying to stretch the coverage too far.
The exact number will obviously depend on the plants themselves. Three compact chilli or pepper plants are very different from three large, spreading bush tomatoes.
What I’ve found useful about the XS1500 Pro is that it gives you enough headroom to light several mature plants properly, rather than just squeezing more pots underneath a smaller fixture.
For a compact home setup, I’d treat around three average-sized mature plants as the most realistic expectation.
How Does the XS1500 Pro Compare With the Mars Hydro TS600 and Spider Farmer SF1000?
The XS1500 Pro feels noticeably different from the 100W lights I’ve used because it gives you more flexibility with both height and coverage.
The Mars Hydro TS600 is the obvious value option. It is much cheaper and, for one large plant or a couple of smaller ones, it can make a lot of sense.
The Spider Farmer SF1000 is a more efficient 100W-class light and feels more refined, but it is still working within roughly the same size of growing area.
The main reason to move up to the XS1500 Pro is that the extra 50W gives you more room to work with. I can hang it a little higher, spread the light over a wider group of plants and still keep enough intensity for tomatoes, chillies and peppers.

If I only needed to light one or two plants, I would not automatically spend more on the XS1500 Pro. Its advantage is that it gives you a genuinely more useful growing area when you want to run several mature plants under one fixture.
Who Is the ViparSpectra XS1500 Pro Best For?
I think the XS1500 Pro is best suited to growers who want a bit more room than the typical 100W-class light gives them, but do not need a large high-power fixture.
It makes particular sense if you are growing several tomatoes, chillies, peppers or similar plants and want enough coverage to keep them all within a useful light footprint.
It is also a good fit if you want:
- dimming so you can reduce output during earlier growth
- silent, fanless operation
- a simple open setup without needing a grow tent
- the option to add more lights later using daisy chaining
If you are only lighting one small plant, herbs or seedlings, a cheaper 100W light will usually make more sense. The XS1500 Pro earns its place when you actually want the extra growing area.
ViparSpectra XS1500 Pro Review: Final Verdict
The ViparSpectra XS1500 Pro has worked very well for the sort of indoor setup I wanted to create: several productive plants under one compact light without needing a tent or a large frame.
What stands out most to me is the usable coverage. Compared with the smaller 100W lights I’ve used, the XS1500 Pro gives me more freedom to spread plants out, raise the fixture when needed and still maintain strong growth underneath it.
I’ve been happy with it over tomatoes, chillies and peppers, and the dimmer has made it easy to adjust the output as the plants developed rather than running the light flat out all the time.
It is not the cheapest option, and I would not choose it for a single small plant or a few seedlings. But for a compact setup with several mature plants, I think the 150W format makes a lot of sense.
For me, the XS1500 Pro’s main strength is that it gives you a useful increase in growing area without making the setup much more complicated.
